Staff at the Royal Military College of Science in Shrivenham have paid tribute to 20-year-old officer cadet Stephen Hilder who died on Friday after his parachute failed to open.
College Commandant Major General Robert Baxter said: "We are all shocked and deeply saddened by Officer Cadet Hilder's death. He was an intelligent and personable young man who had a bright future ahead of him in the Army.
"His energy and enthusiasm infected all who knew him and his death is a tragic loss."
Humberside Police are investigating the circumstances of his death after it was found that his parachute and reserve chute had been sabotaged prior to his fatal jump at Hilbaldstow Airfield in Lincolnshire.
Mr Hilder, who was a percussionist in Highworth Silver Band, was a veteran of more than 200 parachute jumps.
He was studying for a degree in management and logistics and was aiming to follow a career in the Army.
