SWINDON CANCER APPEAL: FOOTBALL fans pitched in to play the sport they love in aid of the Macmillan Appeal.

Adie Hearn decided to organise the fundraising match because his mother Jean Irwin was diagnosed with breast cancer four years ago.

The 11-a-side match took place at the Supermarine Football Club ground in Highworth Road, South Marston on Saturday.

Adie, 26, of Cavendish Square, Park South, said that the event was a great success and has raised more than £1,000 for the Swindon Cancer Appeal.

He said: "It went brilliantly. It was a really good day. The weather was nice, just cool enough to play football.

"I think my mum really enjoyed it as well."

Adie plays centre midfield with the Homebase and BSB teams, both of which play at the Ridgeway School in Wroughton.

He persuaded players from both teams to take part in the match.

And Adie was not at all disappointed that his team lost 4-3.

"It was a charity game so we took it as a bit of fun. We all had a good laugh on the day which is what counts," he added.

Jean, 48, of Whitbourne Avenue, Park South, ran a raffle, which raised £72 for the appeal.

She had a mastectomy and then underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

But since then no further tumours have been found.

She said: "It was a lovely day. I would like to thank all our friends and everyone else who supported us.

"I am really pleased with the amount we raised. I am glad I have done something for other people."

Adie's partners Sarah Simms, 32, and his stepchildren Matthew, 14, Gemma, nine, Aden, seven, and Kelly, five, helped plan the match.

Last week Adie did not have anyone to referee the game but after an appeal in the Evening Advert-iser, Graham Davis stepped in to save the day.

The 49-year-old of Lineacre Close, Freshbrook, said: "I was already committed to another match but this group had put a lot of work in so I thought I would change my plans.

"It was for good cause and I wanted to do my bit. It was a god match in the end."
