A 55-year-old driver is recovering in hospital after she punctured a lung and broke her ankle in a head on collision on the A4 on Saturday evening.

Police are still investigating how her Honda Civic, which was heading towards Chippenham, ended up on the other side of the road in a collision with a Rover hatchback heading in the opposite direction.

The accident happened at 4.50pm outside the Murco Garage, near the Pewsham junction.

The road was closed for almost two hours while firefighters using cutting and hydraulic equipment rescued the woman, who is from Chippenham.

Her legs were trapped under the dashboard.

She was taken by ambulance to intensive care at the Royal United Hospital in Bath, where she is said to be in a stable condition. She is also being treated for severe whiplash.

A 40-year-old Melksham woman, who was driving the Rover, was also taken to RUH and treated for whiplash injuries.

Incident commander Assistant Divisional Officer Rob Wild, based in Trowbridge, said: "This is a dangerous bit of road and we would ask drivers to slow down and take a little more care in this area."
