PUPILS at Malmesbury School went on the air waves last Tuesday with the launch of their own radio station.
Broadcasting from speakers on The Street, the school's main thoroughfare every lunchtime, the station mixes chat with rock and pop music.
Run by sixth pupils from a lighting control cupboard, it has taken the last four months to get up and running with financial help from The Home and School Association.
Music head Chris Bradshaw who has his own show, Mr Bradshaw's Classic Years, said he had been encouraged by the response.
He said: "The sky is the limit. We would like to get some speakers for the lower street but we could network with other schools and it could go on air."
And another group has been rewarded for initiative too. Year 12 pupils celebrated a distinction, the highest grade possible, in their exams for the Young Enterprise Scheme. The group had to launch their own company, which they named Ikarus, and made Christmas cards to sell.
The cards, which were made by hand, to order, proved a success and made a £200 profit from a turnover of £300.
Head of six form Christine Saunders said she was delighted with their results and all the hard work that was put in. She said: "Making the cards was time consuming and I think it was an excellent achievement while coping with the demands of their academic studies."
