CAMPAIGNING parents have called off plans to block the road outside Fynamore School, Calne, saying it would endanger the children they are trying to protect.

The parents had planned to block Isis Road on Wednesday morning, to show the effects that closing the car park opposite the school would have on traffic congestion.

But parent Justin Oliver revealed that they had decided against the measure on safety grounds.

The car park, which the parents say they rely on to be able to drop off and pick up their children in safety, is scheduled to close in the next two weeks, to give access to developer Persimmon, which is building new homes and a community centre on the site.

The parents have been lobbying North Wiltshire District Council to keep the car park open during the work and to retain the spaces when the building is complete.

Mr Oliver said that despite calling off the traffic protest, parents are determined to fight the car park closure.

Last Wednesday evening, a crowd of parents protested outside North Wiltshire District Council offices in Monkton Park, Chippenham, before the scheduled public planning meeting.

"We wanted to get our views heard," said Mr Oliver. "This isn't just a problem for parents. It affects the whole community and especially the local residents of Isis Road."

Mr Oliver said that the parents' group is now awaiting the findings of planning inspectors, who visited the car park on Monday.
