CONCERNED Devizes driver Rebecca Lindgren is campaigning to slow down traffic on a busy estate road regularly used as a rat-run.

Ms Lindgren, 23, who was involved in a collision in Eastleigh Road, has started collecting signatures for a petition at the weekend and 90 people have already signed it.

Ms Lindgren, who lives with her mother and 16-year-old brother Jonathan in Massey Road, said: "Eastleigh Road needs traffic calming measures such as road humps. There should be consideration given to reducing the speed limit to 20mph.

"Motorists use the road as a cut through, and more are using it particularly with the new primary school and housing development nearby.

"It's very dangerous. There are lots more children and pensioners walk to the post office to collect pensions.

"My brother will no longer cycle down there because of the speed of the traffic. He said there are some people who have no regard for cyclists."

Ms Lindgren, a chef, is also calling for changes to the small parking area in front of the shops in Eastleigh Road.

It was when she was reversing out of the parking area that her Peugeot 205 was in collision with another car.

Miss Lindgren said: "It can be difficult to see traffic as you reverse out and delivery lorries sometimes have to park in the road which can add to the problems."

Since her accident Miss Lindgren said she rarely drives down Eastleigh Road. Before the accident she used to travel down it at least once a day.

She has put copies of her petition in the shops in Eastleigh Road. She then intends to send it to Wiltshire County Council's highways department, asking for safety measures to be considered.

Andrea Hampton, the owner of Hairzone, in Eastleigh Road, is backing the petition.

Miss Hampton said: "I have been here five years and I have noticed that the traffic has got busier and motorists seem to be travelling at faster speeds."

She added: "The parking needs to be improved outside the shops as it can be difficult for motorists and pedestrians. I fear there is an accident waiting to happen.

"Speed ramps would be a good idea as would reducing the speed limit, or if not that there should be some kind of warning to motorists of the parking area."

A Wiltshire County Council spokesman said: "Once the petition is received it will be considered by the next regulatory committee."
