WROUGHTON'S annual carnival procession will be winding its way through the village on Saturday.

The festivities kick off with a parade of floats along the High Street from 2pm, along with the British Legion Royal Corps of Drums, the Bluebell Majorettes and the Bishop-stone Samba Band.

Live bands will be playing in several pubs at lunchtime before the procession starts.

In Weir Field from noon will be craft stalls, children's entertainment with clowns, a bouncy castle and food and a beer tent. Two live bands BAK on TrAK and 12 Quo Bars will perform in the evening.

Because of a lack of donations the carnival committee has this year decided to charge £1 before 6pm and £2 afterwards for entry to the Weir Field.

Committee member Tim Benson, said: "We were struggling financially early on, but Nationwide and other local organisations have been great and ensured that the carnival will go ahead. It's been a nightmare in more ways than one, but the show must go on and everyone is really looking forward to Saturday.

"The committee would just really like to thank all its supporters without whom the carnival wouldn't be taking place."

The event costs around £9,000 to stage and the insurance bill alone is £1,400 and was in jeopardy earlier this year after a dearth of corporate sponsorship and private donations.

But a raft of local organisations came up trumps to ensure the annual extravaganza goes ahead for the eighth year running.
