Having just read the letter suggesting a working loco at Steam instantly rekindled my memories.
Part of the whole experience is the sound and smell of the iron horse.
I can think of nothing better than the times I spent on the platforms of Swindon station in the 30s and 40s. Especially on a foggy November evening when the steam didn't rise as fast the smell of the steam encased me and the smell of the oil lamps was heaven.
The guard's whistle and the slamming of the doors was music to my ears the concerto was completed by the the powerful steam noise as the train pulled out.
Although I'm a few thousand miles away I very often recall those times and get out my old train-spotters books.
