THREE members of Devizes Rugby Club have been recognised for their contribution to community rugby in the town.

Ray Taylor, Nick Dark, and Mike Gaiger were guests of honour at the recent Dorset and Wilts County Rugby Committee annual dinner, held at the Wardrobe Military Museum in Salisbury.

The committee recognised the voluntary contribution the trio had made to Devizes Rugby Club and Taylor was presented with an engraved crystal bowl in recognition of his 29 years of service as a county player and committee member.

Meanwhile, the club's playing staff have started a tough pre-season schedule that will include a visit to an army boot camp. Training began in earnest this week and will continue every Tuesday and Thursday.

The Devizes squad will be put through their paces at Warminster Army Camp on August 2.

The players will also take part in a trial game against Salisbury on August 23, the Andy Quinn memorial match against a police team on August 28 and a training game against Fleet on August 30.

At the club's recent annual general meeting members reported back on the previous season's progress.

Taylor said: "The junior section is developing some exceptionally good rugby players. Having supported the Devizes School sports college bid the club expects to work closely with the school for the benefit of all youngsters in the Devizes area."

He said the coaching team at the club is being expanded to cover an increase in player numbers, adding that the junior section was likely to be extended to under-18 level.

Club treasurer Chris Combe reported that the club is on a sound financial footing, with local sponsorship, grant aid and fundraising helping boost the club off the field.

New players can turn up to the sports club in London Road, or contact skipper James Gaiger on (07884) 490943.

Anyone interested in volunteering their time and skills to the club can contact Taylor on (01380) 723537.
