SAM PARKIN is confident the formation of a new double act at the County Ground will be no laughing matter for opponents while hopefully ending his role as the sole goal provider.

The 22-year-old struck 25 times in Division Two last season but received scant support on the scoresheet.

While happy to bathe in the plaudits for a superb first season he knows that successful teams intent on promotion usually boast a formidable attacking duo.

Tommy Mooney looks to be the man to assist Parkin although Jon Stevenson has no intention of playing second fiddle to anyone.

Parkin said: "I think it's important to establish a partnership. You only have to look at people like Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole to see how they have built up a terrific understanding and the rewards that have been reaped from it.

"That's what I want to establish here with either Tommy or Jon.

"I didn't really have a settled partner last season and maybe we suffered at times as a result.

"I played as a pair with both Danny Invincible and Eric Sabin at times but we never scored goals as a pair on a consistent basis, and I mean no disrespect to either of them by that."

Parkin's first opportunity to stretch his legs will come in a behind closed doors friendly with non-league Gravesend and Northfleet tomorrow.

Rather than a full 90 minutes, King is expected to split the session into three 30-minute matches.

He said: "It is little more than a training session to be honest and I won't be putting out a side that resembles anything like the one that takes on Wolves next Wednesday.

"There are some triallists coming down so we'll use the session to take a look at them."

Whether any of the triallists are taken on will be dictated by both their performances tomorrow and the diminishing funds in King's budget.

He said: "I have a small amount left in the budget for players but as for triallists, decisions will be made after the Gravesend session.

"I will let them all know whether I wish them to stay a bit longer or to move on.

"To be honest, I feel I am nearly there apart from the two loans from the Premiership that I want.

"Having said that, if a triallist comes in and really excites me then I might decide to move.

"As I have said though, there isn't much left in the budget."

As for the two loan players, King is remaining tight-lipped on who or what he requires.

He said: "I know what I want in terms of players to strengthen certain areas but I'm not going to talk about it publicly until deals are done."

After some ball work in the first part of yesterday's training session, the players spent almost an hour being guided through stretching exercises by a fitness instructor.

A Town XI will travel to face Buckingham Town next Saturday (3pm).
