STAFF working for a major contractor at RAF Lyneham have been given 30-days' redundancy notice.

Workers at Babcock HCS have contacted the Evening Advertiser to say they were told of the decision at a meeting yesterday. It is understood the move will see a small number of the 400-plus workforce out of a job.

Babcock, which is the largest civilian contractor at RAF Lyneham, was unable to confirm details.

It was awarded a multi- activity contract in March, 1997, which includes work in a number of engineering, support and supply roles at the base including the operation and maintaining of the station's vehicle fleet, computer systems, handling visiting aircraft and the repair of Hercules' aircraft engines and their systems.

One of the employees affected by the decision who wished to remain anonymous said he was shocked by the way the workers had been told. He said: "They just walked in and said 'we are giving you 30-days' notice of redundancy' and then they left." No-one from Babcock HCS or RAF Lyneham was available for comment.

The move comes days after the Government decided to close the base by 2012.
