WINTER may seem a long way off, but youngsters at a Grange Park playgroup know they'll be able to spend the cold, dark days in comfort.

Greendown Playgroup has been awarded a £800 grant from the Oxford, Swindon and Gloucester Co-op to pay for a gas-fired wall heater for their Blue Room.

The old one in a mobile classroom broke down, making it impossible for the children aged between three and five to do their craft activities when temperatures plummeted. Tracy O'Connor, chairwoman of Greendown Playgroup, said: "We could not use our blue room unless the temperature was 18 degrees celsius, or above. In colder weather the children were restricted to using the Yellow Room only. So they are not enjoying the full range of activities available."

In 2001 the Co-op helped the group with a £900 donation to refit a mobile classroom including the construction of a new floor to meet the required standards.
