WE were delighted to read Gareth Bethell's Inside Story featuring lovely Liddington in 48 Hours published last Saturday.
My husband and I ran the Village post office and stores featured in the photographs from 1963 till 1983, in the days before the supermarkets had fully taken their toll. On retiring we moved to Wanborough but have maintained our close ties with Liddington.
While we agree with much that Gareth has written (and understand space limitations) there are three important annual events that take place in the village social calendar of particular note, that he failed to mention. Firstly, the village fete which takes place early in June, organised mainly by the church and public spirited villagers, of which Scruffs Dog Show mentioned by Gareth is an important part.
Also the bazaar held at the beginning of November to celebrate All Saints' Day. Thirdly, and particularly worthy of mention is Liddington Art Group which meets at the village hall and was formed by local artists 18 years ago under the tutorage of Geoff Glover.
Successful three day exhibitions have been held at the end of May each year, and these have raised substantial amounts of money for local charities, in particular the rebuilding of the village hall 1993-94. This year the sum of £375 was raised for Liddington Playing Ground Appeal.
Finally, we cannot fail to mention the monthly Nosh and Natter luncheon, held at the village hall and organised by a group of local ladies on a non-profit making basis. It offers an amazingly varied seasonal menu and is eagerly looked forward to by retired folk and friends from the village and surrounding area.
This letter, we are sure, endorses what Gareth Bethell wrote about the "sense of history, community and togetherness" at Liddington. Long may it continue.
