WOOTTON Bassett's weekly market has been re-launched and will now be held every Wednesday in the High Street next to the town hall.
The town was granted market status by Charles II in 1676, but earlier this year was in danger of losing that status when the market struggled to attract more than six stalls the number required under common law to defend it's rights. These protect the town from rival markets being held on the same day within seven miles.
The town council took over managing the market in February when the Wootton Bassett Town Trust transferred its responsibilities.
Now, the council has bought six collapsible stalls that people can hire .
The three-by-three metre shelters will be rented out for about ££20 a week.
Deputy town clerk, Wendy Marchment, said the town council hopes the number of traders will rise to 19.
The current market has been operating for more than two decades and at one time used to boast 30 stalls along the High Street every Wednesday.
