LECHLADE'S Australian all-rounder Nick Smith was in record-breaking form in Saturday's Wiltshire League Division Two match at Minety.

He returned bowling figures of 10-48 to become only the second player to take all 10 wickets in the league's history, and beat the previous best of 10-49 set in 1990.

Remarkably, Smith, skipper for the day, started the Minety innings behind the stumps until regular wicketkeeper Nick Duncan arrived 15 minutes late from work.

Minety were bowled out for 150, but they hadn't seen the last of Smith, who struck 65 not out as Lechlade, a side depleted by wedding absentees, won by six wickets.

For the 28-year-old, it was his first 10-wicket haul, the seamer's previous best being 6-48.

The Australian, who plays club cricket in Melbourne, is now in his second season with Lechlade.

And he said of his feat: "It's certainly the first time I've taken all 10 in a match, and probably the last.

"It was quite a strange day, but I'd kept behind back home before.

"I didn't really think about the wickets going down because I was concentrating on skippering. I got excited when I'd taken the ninth, but before that I thought someone else would have chipped in.

"It was quite a day and it cost me about three jugs. I certainly had a few drinks to celebrate, and I can honestly say I didn't perform as well the day after!"
