SCHOOLS IN DISREPAIR: WROUGHTON Infant School is a throwback to the old days of education.

Not because its pupils learn by chanting their times tables or because cheeky pupils find themselves being hit with a cane.

But because every time one of its pupils, the oldest of whom are seven-years-old, want to take a trip to the toilet they must head out of the school, across the playground and up an uncovered flight of stairs to its outdoor bathrooms.

Headteacher Susan Pagett says, it might seem okay right now but in the icy depths of winter it is no journey a six-year-old should have to make.

She said: "Swindon Council are still consulting about where their priorities are so I have not yet heard where we fit into the five year plan. Our children have to go outside to use the toilet, and when you are six years old it is not safe."

As well as the outdoor toilets Wroughton Infants has five mobile classrooms, making up 65 per cent of its teaching space, and needs substantial repairs around the building totalling £60,000.

There has long been talk of moving the infant school and building a new school neighbouring Wroughton Junior, The Ridgeway School and Ridgeway Pre-Schools in Inverary Road.

But Mrs Pagett says: "The move is far in the future, and we can't wait that long.

"We hope the council will have recognised our position and we will be high up on the list."
