SOUTH Cerney AC put up a great performance in the Division Three National on the River Trent as they won promotion, writes GODFREY HARGREAVES.

They move up for the second consecutive year after finishing seventh out of the 41 teams.

What was also great for the team was they produced the individual winner, Adrian Innes, from Stroud, who caught the biggest catch and pay out of his life, after an enthralling peg to peg battle with runner-up Chris Buckley from Crewe.

The battle took part on a massive bream shoal at Cranckley Point where Innes landed 112lb-4-8 to win by a single fish over Chris.

But it was a mammoth 8-11-0 bream taken in the closing minutes which tilted the scales in Innes' favour. He used treble red maggot on a size 16 hook in conjunction with a groundbait feeder to take a total of 24 bream.

Other strong performances came from Steve Smart, who was third in his section with 39 points. D Kemp was second with 38 section points, Graham Peer (33), Chris Dutton (31), John Merchant (37), G Goddard (32).

Lyn Wood left it to the last five minutes before catching a fish in the Highworth AC Mark Webb Trophy at Roughgrounds.

The fish turned out to be a 13-4-0 carp which easily beat the opposition. Brian Stallard was second with a carp and bits for 6-2-0 and Nigel Holder and Mick Mills tied for third with 5-12-0 each.

Mick Robins smashed the lake record at Bourton-on-the-Water with a massive 203lb of carp taken on Expander Pellet fished near or on the surface.

Weights were exceptional with Colin Dunn second with 169lb and Pete Sole third on 145lb.

Another record breaker at Ivy House lakes was Mick O'Brien, he broke the five hour match record with a cracking 120lb in the Ivy House lakes club match from peg 24 using pole and pellet up in the water.

Second was John Andres (peg 17) 74-6-0, Paul Gucci was third (peg 10) 73-2-0.

Sections A: Gary Donachie (15) 55-11-0; B Larry Laing (30) 63-4-0.

In the Saturday club junior match on the new canal 1, Nathan Reeves 18-2-0; 2, Matthew Sanders 16-12-0 and third Lee Peachey 11lb.

Consistent Mick Robins won the Saturday Raychem match at Rood Aston with 56-14-0 of carp using floating bread, catching late on in the match.

Second, using a feeder, was Gary Skates 47-2-0 and third was Colin Dunn with 43-3-0 using float fished dog biscuit.

Witherington Farm near Salisbury played host to the BCA lads and they were rewarded with some good catches Mike Kearns winning with 64-4-0 but weights were very close with John Brady second 58-10-0, Vince Harvey 51-2-0 and Paul Hunt 42lb.
