Ref. 25637-6SWINDON CANCER APPEAL: The largest team to complete the Macmillan Bike Ride was awarded a commemorative shield.
The Cricketers pub team, from Emlyn Square, comprised 10 cyclists for the ride, which raised more than £500 for the Swindon Cancer Appeal.
They were Sue Chubb, Michelle Davidson, Jeff Dyer, Craig Jones, Nikki King, Lynda Mills, Carolyn Moody, Colin Price, Dave Trollope and Lee Williams.
Harold Mitchell, of Mitchell's Cycles, in Shriv-0enham Road, donated the shield to the team.
Mr Mitchell, 71, whose shop has served Swindon for more than 35 years, said: "We came up with the idea of giving a shield eight years ago as we thought it added a little prestige to the event.
"We enjoy supporting the bike ride and hope the shield helps create more of an interest.
"The Cricketers team did very well. Ten is quite a lot of people to get across the finishing line.
"I didn't take part myself, but I do still enjoy cycling. I've done a fair bit of riding in my time."
Mr Mitchell added that his family and staff members are always eager to participate, and none more so than his 10-year-old grandson Stephen Mitchell.
"Stephen completed the 18-mile ride which is very good," he said. "He's done the event before but has never gone as far, so I'm proud of him."
Jill Greenaway, the bike ride organiser, said she was thrilled with its success.
"Mr Mitchell gives us lots of support and encouragement, and will do anything he can to assist with the ride," she said.
"His family and staff take part in the ride and help with refreshments on the day, and also with clerical back up.
"We have raised at least £3,000 and the money is still coming in."
Mr Mitchell also donates a mountain bike to the cyclist who sends in the highest amount of sponsor cash.
To be in with a chance of winning the bike, sponsorship must be sent in by July 31.
