SWINDON is the third cheapest place in the country to buy car insurance according to new research.

Studies by car insurance Internet site Confused.com say that drivers in the area will be able to benefit from falling insurance premiums over the next quarter.

In the last two months, the cost of insuring an economy car in Swindon has fallen by around 8.7 per cent to £368.56 while insurance for family cars has risen slightly by 0.15 per cent to £553.32. Even insurance for performance cars fell in price by 1.5 per cent to £1,386.70.

Overall the average cost of car insurance in Swindon fell 3.4 per cent between May and June, while nationally the average cost in the same period rose by 0.3 per cent.

The company's findings also revealed that the UK average price for car insurance is around £716.

In Swindon the overall average price is £562 well below the national figure and the third cheapest in the country for car insurance.

Dundee is the cheapest place in the UK followed by Norwich and then Swindon.

The most expensive places to insure a car in the UK are Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow.

In Liverpool and Man-chester insurance prices are around 60 per cent higher than the average UK price.

Kate Armstrong, managing director of Confused.com said: "We believe that in the next quarter we could start to see the price of insurance actually come down."
