Ref.10173ARTISTIC pupils have been painting, sculpting, drawing and crafting as part of a special art week at Malmesbury Primary School.

The whole school took part and visiting artists came in to talk to the children and illustrate techniques.

Rowena Sheward, art co-ordinator, said: "It was a real community effort. It was brilliant. Lots of parents came in and helped out.

"The children were buzzing. They were full of enthusiasm. They were disappointed when it finished.

"We have lots to show for it and there is a huge art exhibition."

During the week a lecturer from Bath University visited the juniors to talk to them about abstract art.

Other visitors included sculptor Jayne Stillman who helped with the final creation on the last day.

The children were tasked with a particularly challenging group project.

They had to create three totem poles, which are now being displayed in the main entrance to the school.

Each child was given a brick on which they designed a scene on the theme of friendship and family.

They then spent a whole day carving their individual ideas onto a wooden block.

Eventually all the pieces were pieced together to form the three impressive poles.

Mrs Sheward said she wanted to give a big thank-you to all the parents who helped out.

"It simply would have been impossible without them," she said.
