Ref. 10275-05TWENTY-FOUR teams battled it out under the blazing sun at Devizes Cricket Club's annual six-a-side competition but fun and fundraising were the order of the day.

Cross Manufacturing from Devizes took the trophy after defeating Potterne in a highly entertaining final at the end of the day's cricket at Devizes Sports Club on Sunday.

Potterne batted first and set a target of 105 off their five overs. However, it was not quite enough as Cross Manufacturing reached their target with two balls to spare in a nail-biting finale.

Teams were divided into six groups of four where they battled to qualify for play-off places and then a spot in the semi-finals. Every team member except the wicketkeeper bowled and four runs were awarded for wides.

Devizes captain Mark Colyer said: "It's our main event of the year and everyone worked hard to make it happen.

"The weather was very good which always helps the enjoyment on the day, and it's all about getting a bit of money in to keep the club going.

"Without events like this clubs will fold."

He said the competition was strong but added that the main aim of the day was for everyone to get together socially and have fun.

"There was one cricketer on each team but no one took it ultra seriously," Colyer added.

Many of the sides featured members of Devizes cricket and rugby clubs, which meant there was plenty of banter from the sidelines every time a wicket fell. Some teams even donned fancy dress to make sure the games were not taken too seriously.

He thanked Andy Langan for manning the barbecue, as well as Sally Kimber, Jackie Hodder and Jackie Langan for working in the kitchen and selling tombola tickets.

Around 1,000 turned up for the event and helped to raise more than £1,000 for the club.
