THE POLICE officer who is investigating what caused a car to plough into six pedestrians in Marlborough is amazed no one was killed in the incident.

The pedestrians were hit when a Suzuki Grand Vitara 4X4 careered off the road and mounted the pavement in the High Street.

The casualties were treated at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon for injuries including concussion, bruising, a cracked vertebrae and minor cuts.

One of those hit, a 77-year-old Devon man, is still in hospital with a broken ankle.

The others were released after treatment.

PC Richard Oakman attended the incident and is investigating what happened.

The vehicle mounted the kerb opposite the Town Hall, and only came to a halt when it ran into a set of concrete pillars outside the Ailesbury Court office complex.

PC Oakman said: "I am really surprised there were no fatalities. It could easily have been a lot more serious.

"The force with which it hit Ailesbury Court was considerable.

"If somebody had been caught between the building and the vehicle they would have died."

The vehicle has now been taken away for examination.

PC Oakman said: "We will be looking for any mechanical defects.

"At the moment we have no idea what caused the accident."

The driver, a 55-year-old woman from Mildenhall, near Marlborough, was shaken up by the accident, but was otherwise unharmed.

No one has been arrested or charged in connection with the accident, which happened at 2pm on Monday .

Witnesses should call PC Oakman at Marlborough police station on 01672 512311.
