Ref.10218CALNE pupils will ditch ties and blazers for grass skirts and bright shirts when they fly out to Hawaii on Monday.

The 20 pupils from John Bentley School are heading to the Pacific islands to study the geographical and biological environment, but they have been assured there will be time during their fortnight-long stay to enjoy the white, sandy beaches and famous surf as well.

Head of humanities and trip organiser Laurence Rogers said the school was hoping to set up links with the islands as part of the school's commitment to developing international connections.

Children aged between 15 and 18 will be looking at volcanoes, spending time with natives and learning how to prepare Hawaiian food, which is often wrapped in banana leaves.
