A 90-year-old man needed 80 stitches to his head after an attack at his Westbury home.
The pensioner was rushed to the Royal United Hospital, Bath, on Tuesday evening with serious head injuries.
Hospital staff said the man was in a stable condition yesterday.
A police spokesman said: "Fortunately the injured man is conscious and currently stable.
"Inquiries are continuing and we are appealing for witnesses who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously or indeed blood stained, in Westbury, to contact them."
Police found the man after being called to the Jubilee Close area of Westbury at 9pm on Tuesday.

A 23-year-old woman, Victoria Watts, of Station Road, Westbury, has been charged with GBH and two counts of theft.
She was remanded in custody when she appeared at North West Wiltshire Magistrates Court, Chippenham, yesterday.
She is due to appear at Swindon Crown Court on Friday.
