PURTON men are enjoying considerable success in the Lincoln Trophy, the National Double Fours competition.

They beat Spencer Moulton 54-31 in the area final to book a place against Clevedon in the next round.

Purton took the honours on both rinks against Spencer Moulton with Ray Sowden's rink recording a nine- shot success while Chris Cheesley's quartet won by 14 shots.

Success over Clevedon, where the legendary David Bryant still bowls, on Thursday, July 24, will move Purton into the Regional Finals to be played on August 3.

The four regional winners progress to the national finals at Worthing.

Dave Hall, Miles Roberts, Ian Williams and Chris Cheesley beat Paul Macdonald 29-15.

Reg Wadsworth, Max Holland, Mark Wadsworth and Ray Sowden beat Ian Francis 25-16.

SHRIVENHAM ladies are through to the Royal County of Berkshire final in the English Womens Bowling Association National Top Club competition.

They booked their place in the county final of what used to be the Travelsphere competition with a 3-1 victory over Newbury.

In the semi-final played on the neutral green at Abingdon, Shrivenham took the honours in three of the four disciplines only losing out in the singles.

To date they have accounted for Windsor and Eton (home), Wargrave (away), Three Mile Cross (home) and Newbury in the semi-final at Abingdon.

Tomorrow morning they face Great Hollands in the Berkshire final which will be played on the neutral green at Wargrave.

PURTON caused a shock in the last 16 of the Wiltshire Fours Championship.

The quartet of Miles Roberts, Mark Wadsworth, Chris Cheesley and Ray Sowden staged a tremendous fightback from 2-11 down to beat Westlecot's all Middleton Cup rink of Neil Hope, Graham Hatherall, Mike Jackson and Ian Jefferies 20 - 19.

Sowden's quartet now meet four bowlers from Stratton Churchway in the quarter-finals tonight at Westlecot.

THREE combinations from local clubs have reached the quarter-finals in the county triples championship with very comfortable victories.

In the last 16 the trio skipped by R Clews (Wootton Bassett) recorded a 25-12 success while the two Westlecot triples teams skipped by Mark Dyer and Jeff Nichols registered 24-7 and 23-12 wins respectively.

They defeated Hants BC Past Presidents Association 121-107 at Spencer Moulton.

Their next game is away on Sunday, July 20, at Totland Bay when they face the Isle of Wight CBA.
