THE recently announced rundown and closure of RAF Lyneham over the next nine years is indeed a sad and great blow to the area for many reasons.

I would be interested to see what costs will be incurred in the transfer of operations to RAF Brize Norton.

Although Brize Norton is a large air base operating around 30 aircraft at present, it will ultimately have to operate an additional 50 aircraft comprising C130J Hercules, the new A400M transport and possibly a further seven C17 Globemaster transports to add to the four already leased all of which are large aircraft.

Surely a great deal of additional facilities will be required at Brize Norton to deal with maintenance, operational infrastructure and equipment, aircraft parking bays and of course, accommodation for personnel transferred from Lyneham. Finally, what about the environmental impact of operating so many aircraft from one base? I am sure not everyone living in the Brize Norton area will be so pleased at the increase in air traffic,
