Motorist Kevin Munday has been jailed for 28 days after he ran over a neighbour, then stamped on him.

The 35-year-old's attack on Paul Jeffery was part of a feud in the village of Holt, near Trowbridge, a court heard.

Paul Cook, prosecuting, said Munday was driving a Land Rover Freelander on January 18 when he spotted his victim walking in the opposite direction, turned round, followed him and drove onto the pavement, knocking Mr Jeffrey over.

"He returned to the scene and stamped on Paul Jeffery's leg while he was down," prosecutor Paul Cook said.

When questioned by police Munday said he had been looking for his victim but denied deliberately running him over, claiming he thought he had hit the wall, not a person.

"Our case is he proceeded with angry intent. We are prepared to accept he did not hit him deliberately the first time," Mr Cook said.

Munday, of The Common, Holt, pleaded guilty to careless driving, common assault, failing to stop and driving without insurance.

The court heard he had a string of previous convictions, many for assault and grievous bodily harm.

Jailing him recorder Christopher Frazer said: "The fact of a feud does not excuse what you did. It may well be driving like you did was reckless and not a deliberate act.

"The real thing is what you did then, coming back to the scene and stamping on your victim, kicking him when he was down."
