LEAFLETS warning of the potential dangers of too much exposure to the sun are being made available at Swindon Council outdoor playschemes this summer.
Apart from the risk of heatstroke and dehydration, excessive exposure can carry a long term risk of skin cancer.
The leaflets, aimed mainly at parents and containing advice for adults and children, have been prepared by Swindon Primary Care Trust.
The tips the contain include:
Take care to avoid burning.
Try to avoid the midday sun from around 11am to 3pm.
Cover up using loose cotton clothing, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses with protection against ultra-violet light.
Use a strong sunscreen lotion with a protection factor of at least 15.
Bear in mind that children and adults alike can be burned even while in water.
Care trust project officer Phil Lucas said: "It is time people realised just how very important it is to take the sun seriously. Too many people fail to protect themselves and their children."
