INTERNET fans will be able to log on as they do their shopping when a new IT centre opens in Westbury.
Work began this week to transform an empty business on the High Street into a Wiltshire College information technology learning centre.
When the college term starts in October the former NatWest bank will provide internet access for local residents and classrooms for Westbury students.
Sue Dredge, head of community education, said: "This is good news for Westbury residents and the location is great because it is right on the High Street so it is easy to walk to or people can park right next door.
"People are more likely to take advantage of the internet and computers if it is on their doorstep."
Last week a survey by Anna Crosbie, Westbury town centre development advisor, revealed shops and businesses believed the town centre is in decline and faces a bleak future.
The renovation of the former NatWest bank, which has been empty for two years, will reduce the number of vacant shops on the High Street to three.
Anna Crosbie said: "It will be of vital use to everybody, not just students, and help people improve their IT skills."
Local internet fans will be able to log on to one of three computers set aside for public use.
The community access area was secured with a £4,000 government grant and will double the amount of PCs in the town centre. Wiltshire College first gained planning permission nearly 18 months ago but complications delayed work.
