CHIPPENHAM Town's unbeaten pre-season run came to an abrupt end at Basingstoke on Saturday.

The Bluebirds had not conceded a goal in their previous three games, but Tommy Saunders' side were handed a 4-1 drubbing by the Ryman Leaguers.

The hosts went ahead on 22 minutes when Neville Roach struck from 20 yards.

The lead was doubled when Jason Graham was hauled down in the area by Tom Gould and the impeded striker tucked home the resulting spot-kick.

The deficit was halved before the interval when Chippenham's Charlie Griffin converted another self-earned penalty.

Ten minutes into the second period, Basingstoke restored their two-goal cushion when Roach's driven corner was deflected past Bluebirds' keeper Mark Hervin.

A comfortable home victory was complete when Graham headed home 18 minutes from time.

Chippenham boss Saunders was unimpressed by his troops' efforts three weeks ahead of the new Dr Martens League campaign.

"Basingstoke were very sharp we were very blunt," he said.

"It is only pre-season, but we didn't seem to take it seriously enough.

"I think we need to bring in a couple of new faces to freshen things up before the season starts, but I'll have to let a couple go first."

Town will look to bounce back at Screwfix Direct League side Paulton on Thursday night.

NEW Shrivenham manager Alan Dyton saw his inherited squad win 2-0 at Wootton Bassett.

Neil Sutton and Jim Queenan were on target as the Hellenic Division One West side upset their Premier Division hosts.
