A SWINDON school football team has won gold at a mini-Olympics for children with special educational needs.

Crowdys Hill School, in Stratton St Margaret, beat competition from all over the South West to take championship medals at the Western Counties Youth Games in Somerset.

Twenty-five teams from Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Som-erset and Avon took part in what is the biggest sporting event for children with special educational needs in the country.

Events included six-a-side football, indoor curling and poly-bat, a modified version of table tennis.

The Crowdys football squad, made up of 12 pupils aged 11 to 14, was dressed in black and yellow.

"It was excellent day," said headteacher Keith Smith. "We won all four of our games and the children had an excellent time.

"We played well and we played fairly.

"The children love football. It's on the curriculum and they play it every lunchtime."

Uplands School, in Penhill, also sent a team of pupils aged 11 to 16.
