MALMESBURY Victoria took the honours at their own six-a-side tournament at the Flying Monk ground on Saturday.

The hosts' A team comfortably defeated Chippenham Sports & Social Club 3-0 in the final to lift the title.

It was a good day all round for the Vics, with the C side making the quarter-final stage and the B outfit reaching the semis.

Both fell to Chippenham en route to the final, but Malmesbury's first team inflicted emphatic revenge with a clinical display in the showpiece.

James Constable scored twice and Andy Harris was also on target as Malmesbury romped to victory.

The event had not started so well for the hosts and the tournament was quickly reorganised after the number of teams fell three short of the 16 expected.

An impromptu reshuffle saw one group of seven and one group of six contest the first phase of the competition.

When the dust settled, all three of Malmesbury's teams had qualified for the quarter-finals alongside Chippenham Sports, Haydon Wick, Penhill B, Sherston A and Sherston B.

Both Sherston sides crashed out on penalties, to Malmesbury A and Chippenham respectively.

Malmesbury B joined their sister team in the semis with a 1-0 win over Haydon Wick, but the C side were beaten 2-1 by Penhill.

Chippenham were again successful on spot-kicks against Malmesbury B in the last four, and Malmesbury A sent out a message of intent with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Penhill.

They repeated the trick in the final to claim the title with another convincing victory over Chippenham.

Tournament organiser Sue Neale said: "We had a few early problems when three of the teams didn't turn up.

"But we had a quick rethink and it probably worked out for the best in the end.

"It went very well indeed, and it was nice to have a home winner."
