Crucian haul may rewrite record books

SALISBURY Angling Club may have to re-write their record book for the second week running.

Following a potential new rudd record reported in this column last week, comes news of a provisional new crucian carp record caught from the club's lower lake at Petersfinger.

On Saturday, in far from ideal weather conditions, Malc Pepperill caught a rare crucian weighing 3lb 4oz.

Not only is it rare to catch a crucian of this size, it is even rarer from Petersfinger because it has been many years since crucian carp have been caught from the lake.

In fact club member Dave Moody said the last crucian carp he can recall from the lake was in the 1970s.

Both match and pleasure anglers visiting With-erington Farm fishery have been hauling in huge bags of fish as sport continues to be excellent on all the fishery's lakes.

A typical bag was taken by Colin Sellwood, whose 70lb-plus catch over the weekend included several double-figure carp taken from the margins.

On Saturday in an open match Salisbury club member Paul Barnard landed a winning bag of 92lb followed by Terry Sargent with 83lb.

Other matches over the weekend saw winning bags of 116lb, 75lb and 76lb.

The final match in Witherington's evening series was won by Brian Shutler with 56 points. Paul Barnard was second with 51 points with Mark Cannings third with 43.

Petersfinger lakes was the venue on Sunday for Salisbury AC's senior pairs match which was won by Ian Heydon and Jimmy Smith with 18 points followed in second spot by Dave Moody and Mark Blake with 15 points.

Another in the Reid's Tackle mid-week series of matches took place on Witherington's Snake Lake and was won by Reid's own boss Dave Moody with 57lb 10oz, followed by Greg Victor with 55lb 3oz and Julian Heaven with 52lb.

Waldens Farm Fishery's recent introduction of barbel and chub has paid off.

For the second week running a 6lb barbel has been caught - this time from Popes Lake instead of Monks Lake.

The barbel took a lobworm fished by Bernie Partridge who also took a massive 5lb eel using the same bait.

Other big fish from Waldens include roach to 2lb and bream to 5lb from Bishops Lake together with chub to 3lb and perch to 2lb.

Abbots Lake came up with a surprise for Ray Monk when he landed a beautiful 5lb tench from peg 48 using float fished corn.

Both Monks Lake and Popes Lake are fishing well giving good bags of mixed fish.

A 4lb chub has been taken from Deacons Lake by Jack Wateridge, the nine-year-old grandson of owner, Dave Wateridge. Jack used float fished corn to tempt the big chub and then followed it up with a 6lb 4oz ghost carp.

Other anglers on Dea-cons have caught bags of up to 100lb mainly made up of carp and chub.

Sunday's open match was won by Mark Cann-ing with 101lb 8oz. Alan Turner with 41lb 4oz was second and Les Beston with 30lb 8oz.
