CHIPPENHAM Town midfielder Ellis Wilmot is hoping to play a starring role in next month's World Student Games after featuring in the Great Britain Universities first team in two warm-up games this week.

The 23-year-old, who signed for Tommy Saunders' side from Mangotsfield in the close season, successfully won a place in the 20-man GB squad for next month's World Student Games in South Korea.

The side held a get-together last week and then played Charlton Athletic XI last Wednesday and West Ham XI on Saturday. They were also due to face a Sheffield United XI yesterday.

Wilmot played 45 minutes in centre midfield in the 2-0 win against Charlton and then completed the full 90 minutes as GB beat West Ham 1-0, first on the right side of midfield and then at right-back.

He said: "I played the second half against Charlton and it was a good work-out and we were able to get to know each other better."

He said he was encouraged at being involved in both matches but added that it did not secure a definite place in the starting 11 for the finals in South Korea.

"I'm pleased with how it's going and my fitness is improving," added Wilmot. "But it's too early to say whether I will definitely be in the first team. Hopefully the manager, Graeme Bell, sees me as a useful player."

Wilmot first played for Bath University's football team before he was encouraged to work his way into the England University football set-up.

After cementing his place there, he went for trials with the Great Britain University team and made it to the World Student Games two years ago.

The British team, who depart for South Korea on August 11, will play a minimum of six matches during the three-week event.
