A PROJECT to make broadband internet access available to thousands more people, businesses and communities in Wiltshire was launched on Monday, August 4, at County Hall in Trowbridge.

Wiltshire and Swindon Smartplace is a £7 million project to extend the reach of broadband and get the most out of the technology by providing training and support.

The launch outlined plans for developing the technology and a three year roll-out programme.

Speakers from Wiltshire County Council, BT and the South West of England Regional Development Agency explained why they were involved and explained what benefits it would bring.

Wiltshire and Swindon Smartplace is a wide-ranging partnership comprising Wiltshire County Council, BT, the South West of England Regional Development Agency and other public, business and community organisations.

o Only 38 more people need to register interest in getting access to broadband in Wilton for BT to begin work to set up the area exchange.

A number of companies in the town have complained that the lack of access is putting rural businesses at a disadvantage. Peter Le Count, managing director of Wilton Carpet Factory, has written to BT to express his concern.

He says the lack of access is "holding back business development through ineffective communication and directly affecting employment opportunities in the area".

To register interest, log onto www.bt.com/broadband and follow the instructions.
