FOUR Salisbury club members played key roles in Wiltshire ladies' promotion as runners up in Division Seven at County Week.
Playing at the Metro-politan Police grass courts at East Molesey, Wiltshire beat Cumbria, 6-3, Cornwall, 8-1, and East Scotland, 6-3, before losing 6-3 to Bedfordshire in a match reduced to tie-break shoot outs on hard courts because of rain.
Wiltshire were denied a further match through the non-arrival of the Channel Islands team who they were due to face on the second day.
In the three grass court matches, Salisbury's Kar-ina Weedon and Jacky Witt, as second pair, won seven rubbers out of nine, with club colleagues June Keen and Janie Melhuish, as third couple, claiming six.
There were no Salisbury players in Wiltshire men's team which also won promotion by topping group seven of their competition at Beckenham.
An outstanding treble by first pair Rita Hamp-son and Sarah Cowell, who won all three rubbers for the second week running, could not prevent a narrow defeat for Down-ton ladies at Littleton on Sunday in Division 3A of the Hants and IOW League.
A further win by Fiona Saunders and Sheila Youings narrowed the margin to 5-4, but the previous weekend, Hampson and Cowell were the only winners in a 6-3 defeat at home to Avenue B.
In the Hants and IOW Veterans League, River-side Over 50 ladies broke their win duck by beating Steep in the first match played at home.
The victory followed defeats in each of their opening eight fixtures, which by bizarre scheduling were all away.
Riverside's Over 55 men completed their programme with a seventh win from 12 matches when beating Alverstoke.
Salisbury's men in the same section, have five wins, with two matches left, after a spirited victory on Avenue's excellent grass courts at Havant.
David Booth made a winning return to action alongside Nick Hodgson.
Salisbury coped less well when beaten on Astroturf on a wet evening at Lee-on-Solent.
In the Sarum League, Salisbury A secured mid-table safety in Division One, and could yet be joined next year by their B team colleagues, who are one of three teams chasing the second promotion spot from Division Two.
