MUSIC will brighten up the summer in the parks and on the streets of north Wiltshire.

Young people aged 13 to 16 are invited to join four music workshops, organised by the Wiltshire Youth Arts Partnership and funded through Splash (Schools and Police Liaison Activities for the Summer Holidays).

The workshops are free and for people of all musical abilities, and teenagers can just turn up and stay for as long as they want.

Two professional musicians from AKA Professional Music Services in Westbury will lead the workshops, which aim to develop the skills, confidence and self esteem of young people.

"The musicians will bring along all sorts of percussion instruments, like drums and rattling fruit, and they'll be handing out kazoos," said youth arts co-ordinator Angela Stribbling.

"But if anyone wants to bring along their own instrument that would be great it could start a good jamming session."

The first workshop will take place in Wootton Bassett High Street on Sunday from 10am till 4pm.

The Chippenham workshop will be held in John Coles Park on Tuesday, from 10am to 4pm.

These first two events will have a medieval theme, and Heritage Centre education officer Jean Harvest will be attending the John Coles Park workshop dressed in medieval gear.

The Chippenham Youth Dance group, which was set up seven weeks ago, will also join the event.

A third workshop will be held in St Aldhelm's Mead Park in Malmesbury on Wednesday from 10am till noon, then in the town's Newnton Grove Park from 1pm to 4pm.

The final workshops will be held at the Corston Playing Fields on August 7 from 10am till noon and the village's Rodbourne Road play area, from 1pm to 4pm.

It is hoped the pilot project will develop into a larger scale scheme over the next few years.
