CALNE Town Council has tightened up regulations for its Friday market after a row sparked by rogue traders who refused to leave the site.

The couple claimed to be selling clothing and underwear, but the council said when they set up it was clear they were not professional traders and they were asked to leave.

The couple refused, sparking an argument with the council.

The council then put up a notice stating that it was not an official market stall.

Now the council is insisting all new traders seek its approval first before they set up stall at the market place in The Pippin.

Calne Town Council's community development officer Mark Wilkins said that the couple did not have a proper stall and they were selling a variety of goods from cardboard boxes.

He said it looked as if they were at a car boot sale and they were not in keeping with the professional image of the market.

The police were called, but were unable to help and the council also contacted local officials from the trading standards office.

The couple eventually left when it started to rain.
