SWINDON Council has become the first authority in the country to be accredited by the Security Industry Training Organisation the training body for the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.
The council has become an officially approved NVQ centre for the street warden scheme and is one of seven authorities participating in a pilot project.
Street wardens first hit the streets of Parks and Walcot in May last year and have proved popular with the community even though they have no powers of arrest.
Yesterday Swindon mayor Derek Benfield was presented with a certificate by Jo Ludlow , head of awards at SITO.
Lead member for housing services, Andy Albinson (Con, Dorcan), said: "I believe Swindon was chosen because of the success of the scheme in Parks and Walcot and the work undertaken there."
