SCHOOL is the last place most children want to go once they have broken up for the summer.
But youngsters turned up in their droves yesterday at Greendown Community School's popular Great Escape summer project.
Children aged between nine and 13 turned up at the Grange Park school for the start of a series of week-long projects where they can try their hand at a multitude of sports.
Budding Tim Henman's relived Wimbledon, while other sports on offer included football, hockey and athletics.
And the recent bad weather stayed away as the children revelled in glorious sunshine.
PE teacher Chris Dobbs, who has organised the week of activities, said it had been a great success so far.
"Today we did gymnastics, team relays, basketball, cricket, athletics and Danish longball," he said. "Everyone was enjoying it and got involved, but they're absolutely worn out by now."
Organisers are planning to run the activity week next year, when they hope even more children will sign up.
The 2003 Great Escape summer project is being run until Friday, August 8 and costs £50 for a week. For more information call 01793 874224.
