DRUGS ON OUR STREETS: A JAMAICAN drug trafficker stopped at 107mph on the motorway near Swindon was found to have more than £72,000-worth of crack cocaine in his car.
Illegal immigrant Delroy Morgan was couriering the drugs from London to Bristol when his green M-reg Renault Laguna was pulled over by the police for speeding.
The car, being driven by fellow Jamaican Marlon Watson, was stopped on the M4 between junctions 15 and 16 after police spotted it in the early evening of Saturday, April 27.
Officers became suspicious when Watson told them he was called Fabian Mackenzie but could not spell the name.
A judge at Swindon Crown Court was told that Morgan, of Thornton Heath, London, had 726g of the drug with various levels of purity.
Nick O'Brian, prosecuting, said "Police became suspicious and decided to take the car to the police station.
"It was then noticed that the Laguna door opened and Mr Morgan dropped a plastic bag on to the hard shoulder.
"That had a quantity of crack cocaine in it; 726g with a street value of £72,000.
"When this defendant was being taken to the police station he said to the police officer 'The drugs are mine, they are nothing to do with my mate'."
Morgan, of Woodville Road, Thornton Heath, London, admitted being concerned in the supply of class A drugs.
Charles Row, defending, said that his client knew that he had been asked to courier drugs but didn't know what type they were.
He said that he had been given the package on Deptford High Street and was told to go to a phone box in the St Paul's area of Bristol.
There he would dial a number and then be met by someone who would pay him £300 for the bag of drugs. Mr Row said that his client had come to Britain in October 2001 and worked selling CDs in Brixton so he could send money he earned to his wife and seven children in the Caribbean.
Jailing him for five and a half years Judge Tom Longbotham said: "It may well be that after you have completed your sentence you will be deported."
He also ruled that Morgan's car, in which they were travelling, should be forfeited and sold by the police.
Watson, of Banner Road, Bristol, was jailed for three months at an earlier hearing after he admitted possession of a small amount of crack cocaine and driving offences. He also faces deportation.
Sup Richard Rowland, of Swindon police, said: "The suspect was stopped on the motorway for a speeding infringement, and the officers became suspicious of the motorist as he was attempting to dispose of a carrier bag.
"A search of the vehicle then revealed a large quantity of crack cocaine with an approximate street value of £72,000.
"The sentence reflects the seriousness of the crime and underpins our commitment to the ongoing fight against drugs.
"We will rigorously continue to target all those who spread the evil of drugs.
"The message from Swindon police to drug dealers in the town is 'there is no hiding place we will come knocking at your door'."
