THREE cheers for councillors Fanning and Lister for speaking out against high-density development Area accused of being too dense (Evening Advertiser, July 28).
A rapidly growing town may look good on a planning official's CV but it is no good at all for the folk condemned to live in these cramped developments.
A concrete jungle is no substitute for the real thing, even though the official may suggest it is interesting.
The same official dismisses Liden and Eldene as bland (def. devoid of distinctive characteristics) yet I would venture to suggest that these developments carried out by the council in the early 70s are models of good housing, green space and facilities.
People want space room to breathe, in their own good-sized gardens, garages, and roads wide enough to avoid crowding. Green vistas like the Eldene lakes and the wide and pleasant bridle paths tree-lined and edged in green.
I am sure estate agents will confirm the desirability of these dwellings in preference to stacked matchboxes in an interesting concrete setting.
Stick to your guns councillors, put people first. You are at least talking sense.
