WITH regard to comments attributed to me in the Wiltshire Times last week I would like to make the following statement.

We trade from Bank Street, Melksham, and a great deal of our trade comes from passing traffic. If railings of any type were to be installed outside our premises this would cause us a very serious loss of passing trade.

In addition, on a regular daily basis, deliveries of heavy appliances are made at the front of the property.

Whilst we appreciate that safety is of paramount importance we are not aware of any accidents for the four years we have traded in Melksham and the writer, having lived here for going on 35 years, is not aware of any accidents at all during that time.

In fact, these pavements must surely be some of the safest in Melksham.

The pavement along the stretch planned to install railings is about 10 feet wide and being high up there must be a much less risk of being knocked down by passing traffic.

We would therefore ask you to take our very great concern over this matter into account before reaching any final decision.
