DELIGHTED young footballers have been given awards, yet a year ago these children in Swindon Down's Syndrome Group had no concept of teamwork, or the principles of the sport.
The transformation is due to the dedication of Swindon Town FC community coach Jeremy Newton who has organised weekly training sessions for 12 of the youngsters, aged five to 13.
"They've been fantastic," he said as the youngsters lined up to be photographed with the team mascot, one-year-old Louis White.
To add to the excitement at their end of season awards at Haydon Centre, Haydon Wick, members welcomed representatives of Christ Church Amateur Dramatic Society, who chose the group as their Charity of the Year 2002. A cheque for £300 was presented by Nanette Maver and Chris Pagett.
Nicky Parker, treasurer of the Down's Syndrome group, has two sons Luke, 13, and Zachary, eight, who are among the award winners.
"The activities have helped so much. It's brilliant," Ms Parker said.
The young winners are: Best newcomer, Adam Ayres; most skilful player, Mitchell McCarthy; goalkeeper of the year, Michael Lavin; most improved player, Luke Parker; most determined player, Oliver Messenger; most caring player, Zachary Parker; most committed player, Fraser Andrews; best team player, Sam Pierce; sportsman of the year, Seamus Blackler.
