I READ with disbelief that the new Tory run council cabinet voted for an underpass at the Commonhead roundabout along the A419.

This decision was made against all the recommendations and the evidence provided by all three authorities involved, Swindon Council's Highways Department, the Highways Agency and the Environment Agency.

All these recommended an overpass.

The Highways Agency also carried out its own consultations with 81 per cent of those questioned supporting a flyover.

The reason for this support is plain to see, due to the high water table on the east of Swindon and Liden in particular.

An underpass would be 6.5 metres below the present level of this road and extensive water retaining walls would have to be provided and would require permanent pumping.

The Environment Agency also raised its concerns due to the impact of an underpass about the impact of this scheme on the local hydrology (distribution and control of water).

It was a very bad start to the Tories' control of Swindon Council.
