THE historic council chamber in Chippenham's ancient timber-framed Yelde Hall could soon be open to the public.
The 15th century Grade I-listed building, in Market Place, is owned by North Wiltshire District Council and this year started a new life as the tourist information centre after extensive renovation.
Now the tiny council chamber, on the first floor, should be available to visitors by appointment from the autumn when restoration work is complete.
"It will be available to visitors in groups or individually on an appointment basis," said district council leader Ruth Coleman.
"Less able people will be able to enjoy a virtual visit, on a computer downstairs."
Last week the district council was granted planning permission to put up a hanging sign and decals on the glass doors at the Yelde Hall, advertising its role as a tourist information centre.
The planning application had to be referred to the Secretary of State because of its Grade I-listing, and listed building consent was duly granted.
