CRICKET-mad John Wilson is well on the way to a century, but not the sort usually associated with the sport.

The 76-year-old became the Swindon Midweek League's oldest player when he took to the crease for Division Four side L&K Skips.

Walcot-based Wilson usually does the scoring for the team in which son Trevor is a member.

But when they found themselves a man short for the big match against table-topping Nine Elms last week, Wilson Senior quickly volunteered his services.

He explained: "One of the lads was called back to work so I offered to step in. I used to play a bit, but I hadn't picked up a bat in 30 years.

"I batted at number 11 and faced three balls. I didn't get any runs but I gave it a good go.

"I offered to field as well but the lads wouldn't let me I think they thought I would have a heart attack!

"We lost in the end but it was great fun and I'd definitely do it again."

Son Trevor said: "We turned up with 10 and and the next thing I knew dad was batting."

"He usually scores for us so he's always there on stand-by if we need him."

And another generation of the Wilson family stepped into the breach at the 11th-hour on Tuesday night.

L&K found themselves short ahead of their match with Phoenix, and with John still recovering from his exploits, the team turned to his 13-year-old grandson Ben.

He was not called into bat as L&K cantered to victory, but there will be plenty more chances for the youngster if he can match his grandad in the longevity stakes.
