Tips for beating the burglars include:
Fit British Standard security locks to windows and doors.
Fit locks on side gates and sheds.
Always lock doors and windows when leaving home, even if you only plan to be out for five minutes, and also while working in the back garden.
Install burglar alarms and security lighting.
Burglars do not like loose stone pathways which crunch underfoot.
Plant prickly shrubs along fences.
If you buy an expensive piece of electrical equipment, do not leave the box outside your home, because it could attract the attention of a would-be burglar.
Ensure glass panels in doors are made of laminated glass, which is difficult to penetrate. Door bolts should be of the key-bolt variety.
Ask neighbours to keep an eye on your property while you are on holiday, and ensure newspapers and milk are cancelled.
Burglars are less likely to steal property which has been marked with the owner's address, as it is harder to sell.
Set up a Neighbourhood Watch scheme.
