CONDITIONS were far from ideal for South Cerney AC's Tench Cup at Wickwater on Sunday. It was hot and sunny, and the 23 anglers who fished struggled to catch tench.
Lots of carp, bream, roach and rudd were caught, but they did not count. Match winner was competition secretary Pete Horsell.
Two good tench in the last 20 minutes, plus some smaller samples caught earlier, gave him a total weight of 6lb 11oz.
In second place was Colin Dunn, who caught 15 small tench for 5-0-0. Third with 3-7-0 was John Merchant, who caught his only tench of the match in the last five minutes. In fourth place was Paul Thomas, with 10 small tench for 2-6-0.
Considering the hot conditions, weights were good in the Haydon Street AS Jack Cave Memorial at Hannington. All weights were made up of roach taken on stick floats. Bomber Sainsbury took the best bag of 7-6-0 using caster bait, while Ron Bizley used tares to take 6-10-0 for second. Jumbo Rogers was third with 5-11-0 taken on caster.
Roach showed a little in the Merlin Cup match for Isis AC members at Sutton Benger on Sunday, but it was tench and eels which made the bulk of the catches.
Brian Webb headed the field with 11lb, followed by Brian Bathe 7-6-0 and Darren Reynolds 7-2-0. Sections: Alan Pickett 5-7-0 (roach) and Nigel Smith 5-2-0 (roach).
