THE ageing county council-run Coombe End House nursing home in Marlborough is to be replaced by a larger and more efficient building, it was confirmed yesterday.
There has been growing concern in the town over the future of the London Road home, which is the only nursing home still run by the county council out of the 19 it formerly operated.
Private operators have declined to take it over because its 1903s accommodation cannot be upgraded to meet modern care home standards.
Yesterday Maggie Durnell, assistant director of Wiltshire County Council adult and community services, said plans were proceeding for a replacement building on the same site.
She said: "The county council has decided to commission a new building on the site of Coombe End House."
She said the new building would accommodate 40 elderly people and include an 18-place day centre.
